Course Objective
To inspire and enhance a rich variety of surfaces from rustic and tactile to smooth and transparent, using a variety of inventive materials and techniques, such as newspaper relieves, plaster, printing, rice paper mounts and glazing. Learn to preplan, compose and layer with textures—while developing, layering the meaning of the work as well.
You will have an opportunity to work on a surface (or several if you wish), overlapping these techniques, and creating a rich experience for yourself, your work, and the Viewer!
Emphasis is placed on abstract imagery, though the techniques are not exclusive, and will breathe life into any style or subject matter of painting.
Composing with Textures and Layering Meaning
Though such division is artificial, there are 2 kinds of textures in painting, tangible, something one can touch and feel, --and intangible, something one sees by the eye perceiving a depth, a 3 dimensional space. Within these two there are unlimited variations, and applying them alternatively creates a unique and personal rhythm in the work.
Artists often think about composing as placing elements NEXT to each other. This is a very limited view. Composing also includes placing elements ON TOP of each other. This is called LAYERING.
Layering creates not only a visual, but also a philosophical and emotional depth to your work. The more “experience” your image (and you as its creator) goes through, the more sophisticated, profound it will look.
Being conscious of one’s creative process and vision is an integral part of this course, thus lots of group discussions are encouraged.
This course can build on top of previously taken painting, drawing, or sculpture classes of any kind.
